USS Richard M. McCool (LPD 29) Commissioning Ceremony

The commissioning of the USS Richard M. McCool (LPD 29) was a momentous occasion, marked by a week full of events and celebrations. These included community events, Navy flyovers by the Blue Angels, and a visit from the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. The week’s festivities were hosted at Naval Air Station Pensacola. They saw participation from Marine Aviation Training Support Groups Two-One and Two-Three, Navy Training Wing Ten (VT-10) Wildcats, Navy Band Southeast, McGuire’s Pipe and Drum Band, and numerous Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps and Navy League Sea Cadets from Alabama, Arkansas, and Pensacola.

A Tribute to Heroism

The ceremony’s guest speaker, Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, paid tribute to Captain McCool, highlighting his bravery and leadership under extreme circumstances. Secretary Del Toro emphasized that McCool’s heroism and commitment to his crew and ship are exemplary. His reflections set a poignant tone for the commissioning, honoring McCool’s legacy and contributions to the Navy.

Future Endeavors in Amphibious Warfare

Secretary Del Toro also expressed enthusiasm for the Department of the Navy’s plans to secure the Amphibious Multi-Ship Procurement Contract, which includes three San Antonio Class amphibious ships and an America Class amphibious assault ship. His comments underscored the ongoing commitment to strengthening the Navy’s amphibious capabilities and continuing the legacy of the USS Richard M. McCool.

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Lisa Franchetti highlighted the integral role of amphibious ships like the LPD in the Navy-Marine Corps team. She noted that the USS Richard M.
