The San Diego Council of the United States Navy League is very active in its recognition and support of sea service personnel. Recognition and support are achieved through the following events and activities:

Formal recognition of outstanding Marines, Sailors and Coast Guardsmen of the Quarter/Year at the various local bases

2024 May Breakfast Event – Sea Service Member of the Year Awards
San Diego Council held its 4th Annual Sea Service Member of the Year Awards in hosting 90 guests in attendance that included; Naval Education & Training, Force Development, Deputy Commander; Rear Admiral Robert C. Nowakowski, Commander, Third Fleet Command Master Chief Trenton Schmidt and Retired Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Russ Smith. Guest Speaker; RADM Nowkowski provided insight on Navy’s Warfighting Strategy, Culture of Excellence 2.0, Get Real Get Better, Navy Leadership Development Framework 3.0 and Recruting/Retention initiatives. He was presented an appreciation certificate by Vietnam Prisoner of War Survivor; CDR Jim Bedinger, USN(Ret) and President Tracy Owens. Tracy presented the Community Partnership Appreciation Award to Navy Veteran and Business Owner of LC Embroidery & Cleaners; Rolan & Virginia Patzi for their strong support of the council’s sea service programs. An additional thank you to LC Embroidery generous donation of $5k in support of the council’s awards recognition and breakfast sponsor. 2024 April Breakfast Event – USS SAN DIEGO
San Diego Council recognized USS SAN DIEGO (LPD 22) Sailor of the Year (FY23) and Sailor of the Quarter (2nd Qtr) Award Winners. Congratulations to BSOQ – SN Cyril Baldwin, SOQ – EN2 Arcelann Calado and JSOY – QM2 Neshaun Gill, SSOY – MM1 Robby Cruz. Additional special awards recognition was presented to SAN DIEGO Culinary Specialists; CSSN Maycol Sanchez-Castro and CS2 Victor Ralph-Vizcarra for their outstanding presentation of the CPO Birthday Cake. Awards where sponsored by First Command. During the Breakfast Event, Commanding Officer, USS SAN DIEGO; CAPT David Walton served as guest speaker, where he provided awareness on his command responsibilities and the role it plays in today’s modern era. President Tracy Owens presented First Command Community Appreciation Partnership Award for their strong support of the council’s sea service programs and $1,200.00 donation.

Family At War” by Jim Bedinger. During this special event the San Diego
Council recognized its Sponsors and Volunteers for their outstanding
support throughout the 2022 Year. Including, presenting over 120 toys
to the Marines in support of Toys for Tots and presented numerous door
prizes for those that participated in this special event.

Fiscal Year 2021 Type Commander Sailor of the Year Awards Recognition
The San Diego Council collaborated with Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and Boeing in sponsorship to recognizing the FY-2021 TYCOM SOY Award Winners for Commander, Naval Air Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet (CNAF), Commander, Naval Surface Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet (CNSP), Commander, THIRD Fleet (C3F) and Commander, Submarine Forces, U.S. Pacific Fleet (CSP).
During this event San Diego Council Members attended special events throughout the week that included the San Diego Zoo, Bernardo Winery and lunch and dinner receptions for the presentation of awards.

April Breakfast Event
San Diego Council held its April Breakfast Event, recognizing Navy and Marine Corps active duty service members for their outstanding performance as USS San Diego Sailor of the Quarter Award Winners; YN1 Brianna Slaughter, IT2 Arthur Keilbik, ABF3 John Macdonald, and LSSN Roman Dimapilis. Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego Recruiter and Drill Instructor of the Quarter Award Winners; SSgt Jacques Craven, Sgt Vanessa Crump, Sgt Essozolim Amana, and SSgt Eli Goodwin. Expeditionary Strike Group 3 CS1 Alan Yang was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation for his Outstanding Volunteer Service with the San Diego Council. Guest Speaker was Captain Kevin Ralston who provided a motivational speech honoring April’s Awardees and tribute to the Chief Petty Officers and the role they serve in the U.S. Navy. Awards were sponsored by TRIADA Tactial Inc Veteran Business Owner Nil Ng. TRIADA Tactical is a Community Partner Affiliate that strongly supports our military, veterans, and their families. CPO Birthday Celebration & Charity Event
San Diego Council held its first Charity Event coming off a two-year COVID Post Pandemic. The Charity Event Celebrated the U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer’s Birthday – 129 Years of Excellence. The event had 75 guests for the celebration that range from business leaders to sponsors and guests from the community. Including Commander, Naval Air Forces U.S. Pacific Fleet, Force Master Chief Trenton Schmidt, Expeditionary Strike Group THREE CMC Matt Danforth, USS San Diego CMC John Lanza, USS JOHN FINN CMC Erika Lavallais, DESRON23 CMC William Coston, MCRD 1stSgt Carlos Canezgil and GySgt Kenneth Catledge, along with many Sailors and Marines from all paygrades in attendance. The San Diego Council thanks all our Sponsors for their generous donations in gifts to support our Charity Event.
Sea Service Chairman Marty Magaña visited aboard USS San Diego (LPD 22) to presents awards on behalf of the Navy League San Diego to the Sailor of the Quarter (4th Qtr) Award Winners; Senior Sailor of the Quarter; HM1 Larson, Sailor of the Quarter; EN2 Keatts, and Junior Sailor of the Quarter; IC3 Harrington for professional excellence, on Friday, 4, 2022. San Diego Council recognizes Maritime Security Response Team West 2021 Enlisted Person of the Year; ME1 Sawyard Mundford and Enlisted Person of the Quarter; YN2 Katelyn Yang. Awards sponsored by USAA.

Navy League San Diego held its first Morning Breakfast Event for 2022. Its Guest Speaker was CAPT Henry S. Kim, Commander, Amphibious Squadron THREE.
During this event, Captain Kim’s met with numerous guests and was presented a book by Author, James Bedinger, CDR, USN(Ret) and Vietnam Veteran and Prisoner of War Hero – “Patriot, Prisoner, Survivor: An American Family at War”. Additional highlights of this event was Navy League San Diego Sea Service Chairman; Marty Magana, CMDCM, USN(Ret) presenting Sailor of Quarter awards to USS San Diego (LPD 22) Blue Jacket Sailor of the Quarter (4th Qtr); Fireman Tysen W. Sparbel and Amphibious Squadron THREE Senior Sailor of the Quarter(1st Qtr); OS1(SW/AW) Marcell M. Harris for professional excellence.
