First Female Master Chief Perry Office in Gunner’s Mate Rating

In a solemn ceremony held at the U.S. Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C., a significant moment unfolded, marking a historic occasion. On April 28, 2023, Reserve Master Chief Gunner’s Mate Jessica Harrison made history as she quietly achieved the esteemed rank of Master Chief Petty Officer, becoming the first woman to do so in the Gunner’s Mate rating.

The Gunner’s Mate rating has a rich heritage, established alongside other original ratings such as Boatswain’s Mate, Quartermaster, Master-at-Arms, and Yeoman by The Naval Armament Act of 1794.

Harrison’s remarkable accomplishments are a testament to her unwavering determination and drive. Her inspiring journey serves as a beacon of motivation not only for past and present Sailors but also for those with aspirations to serve in the armed forces.

The significance of Harrison’s progression extends beyond the Gunner’s Mate community. It is a triumph for all enlisted Sailors. It is also an excellent reflection on the extraordinary strides that women in the armed forces continue to accomplish.

Attaining the prestigious rank of E-9, Harrison joins a select group of leaders entrusted with the crucial responsibility of bridging the gap between officers and enlisted personnel. As supervisors and advocates for their Sailors, they play a vital role in ensuring their well-being and success.

Harrison’s achievement is well-deserved. Under her belt she has 17 years of service in the navy reserve, including 14 years on active-duty orders. Harrison has served on two deployments, one in Iraq and the other one in Kuwait.

In addition to her dedication to serve in the United States Navy, Harrison managed to earn a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in Education. She is a devoted mother to her two sons, Trey and Logan.

Congratulations on your well-deserved success Master Chief Petty Officer Harrison. We can’t wait to see all the many things you have yet to conquer unfold. We are rooting for your continued success.
